Toscana Restaurant

I like Italian food a lot, but I have never been to this place...

Oh, this is "Dolcino"-- not to be confused with the Trattoria Toscana down on Carmine Street in the Village. This place here is in Kips Bay!

This is such an amazing place! The food is fantastic and it's never crowded. The people working there pay attention to you throughout the meal and make sure you are comfortable.

    I would DEFINITELY recommend.

My dad brought me to dinner here. It wouldn't have been my choice, but we had a nice time. He was impressed the bartender got his drink right.

We were NOT impressed, however, with the grilled calamari. It was tough and dry. Flavor may have been nice if it didn't taste like day-old food reheated. The portabello mushrooms were great, and the baked clams were alright.

Dad got the veal tartuffate which I had been eyeing. Glad he got it, and glad I didn't. It was so good but the truffle oil is soooo rich. I couldn't have eaten more than a few bites.

I got the chicken scarpariello which is an unusual order for me. I rarely ever order chicken. The menu described chicken with sausage and garlic and white wine sauce. However, there was tomatoes and red sauce in my order. I assume this was normal, but this isn't what I thought I was ordering. My meal was okay.

The side of pasta we ordered with garlic and oil was good. We were too full for dessert but did have some limoncello. I love when places serve limoncello.

    Service was good.

I'm a big fan of eating in and I've been let down far too many time by spots in my neighborhood.

    Enter Dolcino.

It's a couple bucks more than other spots in the area, but it's totally worth it.

I opt for the Spaghetti Bolognese when I order here. My boyfriend orders from here every time he comes over. And since I was home sick all last week, I think they're beginning to recognize him.

Back to the food! Not sure how to describe, but it's solidly delicious bolognese. Not too tangy tomato sauce and plenty of meat. You definitely don't feel cheated when you order from here. It's honestly enough for 2 servings (I usually have the other half for lunch the next day). Take out order come with bread and butter.

Can't speak to the atmosphere since I usually get delivery, but I've been in there before and it's very quaint and quiet, cute spot for a date if you're just staying in the neighborhood.

Admittedly a little pricey for take out, but totally worth it.

This restaurant experience was interesting. My mom and I went around 7:15 on a Thursday night and it was pretty quiet. Only 1/3 of the restaurant was full. The waitress didn't give us a wine list and left it up to us to guess what they had at the bar. The menus were flimsy and dirty but the options were plentiful. The waitstaff was incredibly slow and it took 15 minutes to get our drinks and about the same time to clear our plates even after it was clear we were finished. Despite all these downfalls, and much to our surprise, the food was amazing. It was fresh and flavorful. Bottom line is, for the price, it was worth it. If you want a romantic place with ambiance and a nice atmosphere, this isn't it.

Surprisingly nice spot in an otherwise drab part of town.  Went with a colleague for lunch and we both did the 3-course prix-fixe for $20.  I had leek soup, chicken Francese and flourless chocolate cake, while my colleague had a Caesar salad, sole Francese, and tiramisu.

Everything was delicious, the service was attentive, and paced well.  Mellow but tasteful atmosphere.  Good value and a nice choice in the neighborhood.  Would definitely return.

One of my wife's and mine favorite places. Good food at a very decent price. The owner is always there, he's the chef. The inexpensive price compared to other places makes this place a major find in NY...

Dolcino is the quintessential neighborhood Italian trattoria. Very friendly, nicely appointed, some good food and a decent wine list. I recently had their prix fixe 3 course lunch here with someone who is a regular at Dolcino and has extolled their virtues to me for quite some time.

The complimentary roasted eggplant was really delicious. I ordered the roasted portobello mushroom salad which was very tasty and served over a bed of spring mix with just a hint of dressing which is just as I like it.

For my main course I chose the fish filet, some type of sole, but asked that it just be broiled with lemon rather than made with butter. Maybe straying from their usual threw them but the fish, while fresh, was not cooked right and was rather mushy and uninspired. My dining companion's salmon though was as it should be with just the right amount of fat and char.

For dessert one could choose ice cream or their homemade ricotta cheese cake. Being more of a fan of cream cheese cake they kindly packed it up for me to bring home to The L. and he liked it later that night. Their coffee was good and strong.

I would definitely try Dolcino again and perhaps order as is from the menu and hopefully raise their rating. The atmosphere was lovely and everyone seemed to have a good time. 3.75 stars.
