A Ton of Thai Food in Midtown East--let's try Ruay Thai

I started looking the other day and I realized there are scads of Thai restaurants in Midtown East...how you find the best ones, I don't know.

Let us see what Yelp says about this one--oh no, just like another restaurant we had recently,
one person doesn't like it at all while yet another says "This is a gem."

Overall, Yelp gives it a pretty good rating..

FYI- this place has changed their BYOB policy. It's no longer a true BYOB place unless you count a $25 corking fee as BYOB...

Besides that fact,  this place is down the BEST Thai food in NYC. I order or dine here at least once and week and everyone I bring here also agrees on how fantastic the food and service is. The delivery is always on time or early and the in house service is just as great!

Make sure you order the Drunken Noodles you won't be sorry, to say they are incredible is an understatement. My brother, the foodie came to visit from out of town we ate here the first night of his visit. He asked to order in a plate of drunken noodles the night before he left. He was blown away!

I'm also a huge fan of their crab and cheese dumplings they just seem to make it really well and crispy. They have great jungle curry (although warning its extremely spicy) and the red curry is fantastic too.

Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a consistently good Thai meal!

    Decor: 3/5
-small dining area with seating fairly close to each other
-there is seating for roughly 20 people

    Service: 2.5/5
-A bit on the slow side, especially bringing out the soup and thai tea

    Food: 2/5
-Thai tea ($3) was slightly lighter in flavor and sweetness than what I'm use to so this can def satiate those who don't want their tea strong and sweet.
-Tom Yum soup was again, not as expected and much lighter in flavor. I like mine with a stronger lemongrass and sour flavor. There was no protein in this soup.
-Pad woon sen (glass noodles) portion was generous except where is the protein? I selected chicken and received two quarter sized pieces of chicken and one about half the size of a coaster. Also for the third time, the flavor was very light..almost bland.
-Maybe today I had a chef that just enjoyed preparing everything light? but I've definitely had much better thai food elsewhere

This restaurant deserves 3.5 stars. The food is solid - no particular dish stood out, but the overall quality was fairly good. We ordered the basic thai fried rice, short-rib dumplings, and lime-leaf chicken. The chicken was average - it pretty much tasted like any spicy, basil-infused chicken dish one would encounter in their local Thai restaurant. The rice was great - perfectly cooked and the spice was well balanced. While the short-rib dumplings sounded innovative and exciting, I thought they tasted a little dry and lacked spice.

Service was reasonably good. Our dishes arrived quickly, and our waiter was friendly and helpful. The restaurant ambience is nothing particularly special. I would not recommend this place for big groups because the tables are placed very close to each other so noise spread quickly.

Was ok, I got Pad See Ew and it was ok. I've been looking for a great thai place in Murray Hill for a while now, I guess I'll keep on looking.

This is nothing you didn't already know... but the Yelp mobile app is pretty much the greatest invention since Mario Batali's Crocs (maybe that's a bad comparison). But yeah, it's pretty great. Here's the scenario:

My perty, smart, funny lil' girlfriend was in the Upper East Side (we both live downtown) and was hankering for some Thai food somewhere halfway between where we currently were (I was in TriBeCa on the hunt for Fatty Blatty http://findfattyblatty.t…). Roughly halfway between our locales was Murray Hill, and being that I spend about 0.07% of my time in that area of town, I really had no idea where to go. Then I whipped out my iPhone. Problem solved.

Ruay Thai is a small joint on 2nd Avenue (c'mon 2nd Avenue Subway!) that's super easy to get to via the 6. They have super friendly staff, and the food is quite enjoyable. Specifically the summer rolls (they incorporate avocado into 'em - a nice touch), the pad see yew (perfectly drunken), and the panang curry (spicy - if you're a gringo, watch out). Throw in two Thai iced teas and the total was just over $30. Not a bad bottom line with that much tasty food in our presence.

It closes at 10:00pm, so they don't burn the midnight oil by any means. However if I lived in the nabe, this place would be at the top of my Rolodex for sure.

I ordered food for delivery at lunch time. It arrived 30 minutes late. After It arrived, I wish it hadn't made it to me at all.

The side dish from the lunch special was not included with my order.

The protein I ordered was squid but the lunch special I received was chicken.

There was a PIECE OF PLASTIC IN THE FOOD!

    Never again.

This is a consistently very good go-to Thai place.  I travel frequently to NYC and continue to come back.  Larb, fried snapper, drunken noodles, and watermelon/tomato salad are standouts. Wash it all down with a cold Singha.

I've never actually been to Ruay Thai but I've ordered delivery from them twice with excellent results. I just returned from Thailand in January so I can be a bit picky about my pad thai.

The food is delicious. There is nothing sadder in your mouth than greesy bland noodles. The noodles/chicken are not overcooked, the flavor is just right, and the portions are extremely generous. Whoever is cooking the pad thai knows exactly what they are doing. Yum!

The delivery was very fast and delievery neatly. I've tried a ton of yucky thai food in midtown and this will certainly be my go-to from now on.

Tiny dining room and big flavor.  We sampled a lot:

-- Blue crab dumplings in Tom Yom soup
    -- Cucumber salad
    -- Duck with tamarind sauce
    -- Curry with squid

All fresh.  Unusual and terrifically flavorful spices.  Everyone in the place seemed to be devouring their food.

Fresh lemonade, tea and Thai coffee were served in elegant, tall glasses.  We opted to buy wine at a neighborhood liquor store and Ruay, which doesn't yet have a liquor license, brought us glasses at no extra charge.

    This place is a gem.
