Horace Greeley

Statue dedicated to Horace Greeley, the New York Tribune editor famous for his saying "Go West, Young Man"-- spurring on the expansion of the country which was seen in those days as having been declared by Divine Providence....or "Manifest Destiny."

Greeley was a Republican who was disgusted by the corruption in Grant's administration after the Civil War and ran against him for President...losing in a landslide.

He was the only American nominee to have died before all the electoral votes were counted.
