Notice that the Boys and Girls Club still exists in this area.They used to have a much bigger facility a few blocks away.
Like all charitable organizations, their fate varies with the economy.
Boys and Girls Clubs were used as an example by Reagan of the benefits of "volunteerism"-- but all organizations like this need commitment from people that is not always available.
Understand volunteering in NYC has gone up, actually. I do volunteer work myself.
